You want to be the “go-to” person where people come to YOU for advice. You want to start a movement. You want to be your own boss. You want to be the biggest brand name in your industry. You want to have a globally recognized slogan and logo. You want to make millions of dollars. Are these some of your aspirations? They might be! Many people want to start a business and then become the greatest of all time! But, here is the kicker, why? Why do you want to achieve these things? Why is it important for you to accomplish those things that you want to accomplish?
When I decided to start my business I wanted to be my own boss, I really wanted to be more excited about Monday’s then Friday’s. I started thinking about all of the reasons I wanted to be my own boss and how I wanted to live my life. Most times figuring out your Why is more about figuring out what you don’t want more then what you want. After determining what the heck I didn’t want, this gave me even MORE motivation to work my butt off to accomplish my dream of opening Feverish. I knew what I wanted, but I had to determine “why” I wanted what I wanted.
I have come across many entrepreneurs in my journey and I have loved hearing their stories of their own adventures. The most successful and lucrative owners are those that not only had dreams, but they knew WHY they wanted those dreams. Why do you want to be rich? Do you just want to be rich to tell people you are rich, because that might not be the best reason. However, saying that you want to be rich because you are tired of living month to month, you want to pay for your children’s college funds, you want to have a beach house, or you can’t stand not being able to pay for the basic essentials, those might be great “why” answers. Whatever the reason may be, you need to know “why”. Having a lot of money is quite the easy question to answer “why?” to, but what about more difficult questions like, why do you want to have a globally recognized brand? Why is it important for you to be a household name? Why do you want people around the United States (or world) to know who you are and what your brand is all about?
The most important reason for knowing your WHY, is those dark days when life punches you in the gut, it remains your motivation to continue. I always thought I had a strong WHY until I became a mother, and my WHY changed and got stronger and the daily reminder of my why, is my daughter.
If you were able to answer “why” to your goals then you will have a better chance at succeeding in your goals. If you know why you want to have a lucrative business then you will have more motivation to continue. For example, let’s say you want to lose 60 lbs. If you goal was to lose 60 lbs but you didn’t know “why” then your motivation would completely meaningless. However, if you were to write down the reasons why you want that goal then you are able to focus and stay motivated. You might want to lose 60 lbs (haha that’s my summer 17 goal) because you want to be healthier, have more energy, have more self-confidence, be able to fit into your favorite pair of jeans, or you might even be trying to lose weight for an upcoming vacation. These are all motivators. Your goals are not necessary motivation, but the “why” is a HUGE motivator.
Stop and think about your goals, but also in order to achieve the most success you must also write down the reason “why” you want to make it to those goals and work backwards from your big hairy scary goals and outline the steps you need and the people you need in your corner to make it happen.
